Senhüs . Keitum Süderstraße

The bronze sundial can be found on the southern gable end of the Senhüs on the grounds of the Benen-Diken-Hof in Keitum. When designing it, I decided on the motif “sun”, as this house is the sun house. Where there is light, there is also shadow, so I didn’t want to miss the clouds. And since the guests in the house will certainly feel comfortable, like floating on a cloud …

I have added a glass element on which a ship can be seen.
Ships and seafaring have played a major role in Sylt’s history and have shaped the captain’s village of Keitum.

In addition, the ship stands as a symbol for optimism, for security, for togetherness – we are all in the same boat, for harmony, reaching the other shore safely, travelling.
Then there is flotsam and jetsam, among other things crab claws, which can pinch if we do not move carefully here by the sea.

5,000 years of Sylt history

Table on the cliff

Bronze . 2019
On the cliff . Sylt Museum . Keitum

5,000 years of Sylt history. Ten aspects deal with this diversity from different directions – be it the changes brought about by nature or the artefacts and cultural habits that reveal the special features of the island and its inhabitants. Each of the five artists – Walter vom Hove, Hans-Joachim Pohl, Ingo Kühl, Edda Raspé, Hans-Jürgen Westphal – has created two thematically different relief plates, which were cast in bronze and now function together as a tabletop. The table invites visitors to linger and get in touch with Sylt’s history at the special and beautiful location on the cliff on the mudflat side of Keitum. The artistic works are deliberately not presented behind the glass of a museum showcase – touching is expressly permitted and desired here!

The project was developed in cooperation between the five artists and the Söl’ring Museums.

My motifs are “600 years of Sylt” and “Biike”.

Story

Glass . 2008 / 2009
Foyer St. Nicolai
Sylt . Westerland

I have brought diversity and mystery, the created and the endangered, myths and symbols of the individual acts of creation into and onto the glass and supported them with coloured sprinkles.

In the upper part of the relief there is the sun, 7 stars for the seven-pointed star, the constellation Orion; near the cross as a vortex the clouds which announce the impending disaster, the moon and the ladder to heaven (Genesis 28) with twelve steps, the creation of the rhythm of time. In the lower part of the relief on the left, the hullabaloo – life develops out of chaos. Water, man, at first tentatively hinted at on a boat. The next field shows man in silhouette, in correspondence with the bulls. Below, the stag, an ancient symbol of baptism – also found in the front of the baptismal font. (Psalm 42:2 “As the deer … thirsts for fresh water, so my soul thirsts for you God.”)

Furthermore: animals, the dove as a symbol of the Holy Spirit, also of peace. Other birds, bread, fruit, two flying hearts, man and woman, mountains, grass, a tree with small leaves, a large leaf, two snakes – the memory of paradise. The glass wall opposite is much simpler: two lines – Christ’s words – descending from heaven to earth – ascending from earth to heaven. God in Christ descended … and ascended – it says in the Creed.
