TAGEWERK® ELEVEN entitled »AMMERSEE . Changing Horizons« is a tribute to the life of glass artist Hans-Jürgen Westphal on Lake Ammersee. Places that are of special significance to him are photographed by the photographer and designer Monika Goecke, and the photo prints are then processed by Hans-Jürgen Westphal in a painterly manner. His special way of painting arises from his handling of the material glass, the use of light and shadow, of transparencies and reflections.

THE PHOTOGRAPHER . THE PAINTER . THE SEA
The photographer Monika Goecke and the glass artist and painter Hans-Jürgen Westphal agree on a joint project: photos of Lake Ammersee are to be taken, of the region where the artist has set up his studio workshop, where he lives and works. In late summer 2020 and spring 2021, he will take the photographer to places on the lake that are special to him, places that trigger memories and strong feelings in him. He describes his impressions of the respective location, the elements that are important to him, their interplay, his feelings, as he experienced them, as he would like to bring them into the motif by painting – reconstruct them, emphasise them, make them visible, experience them in the first place.
Now the photographer’s work begins. She takes atmospheric photographs of the lake and its shores. Her gaze searches for the painter’s ideas in the motif in order to depict them as far as possible; her photographs are both reality and a synthesis of sensitive understanding and mutual respect.

The artist delves into the motifs created, anticipates the pictorial event he wants to develop, chooses among his colours.
Hans-Jürgen Westphal is a glass artist and painter, painter and glass artist. And it is no coincidence that he prefers to live by water and paint water. For both media – glass and water – are very similar in their states of aggregation – liquid and solid. His painting allows him to use the experience gained from creating his glass art pictorially and to give the motifs a special depth – through the interaction of transparencies and reflections, of play of light and shadow.
Hans-Jürgen Westphal follows his inspiration, makes each motif his own, restages it according to his ideas, leaving fragments of the original photograph visible. He creates a new reality that reflects his feelings.
